Language Exchange FAQ

Everything you need to know about practicing languages with real people — in your city or online.

Getting Started

What is Lexody?

Lexody is a language exchange community where you practice speaking with real people — not bots, not pen pals. Match with someone whose native language you're learning and who is learning yours, then meet for a structured conversation called a Lex.

We provide conversation topics to keep your practice focused on real-life situations and the vocabulary you're actually working on.

Who can use Lexody?

Everyone! Lexody is open to language learners of all ages and backgrounds — not just college students. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, living in a big city or a small town, you're welcome here.

You just need a profile, at least one language you're learning, and one native language to get started matching with other members.

Why was Lexody created?

Our founder became fluent in French while studying abroad, but her skills faded quickly once she returned home. Existing options — pen pals and unstructured video chat — didn't give her the real conversational practice she needed.

She started an in-person language exchange program on her college campus. It took off, and Lexody was born — now available to learners everywhere, in person or online.

How It Works

What is a Lex?

A Lex (Language Experience) is a one-hour language exchange session between you and your partner. The format is simple:

  • 30 minutes — speak only in the language you're learning
  • 30 minutes — speak only in the language your partner is learning

Before your Lex, browse conversation topics in the app to pick what you want to practice. You'll earn Lexicoins for completing Lexes too!

Can I meet in person or virtually?

Both! When you schedule a Lex, you choose where to meet. Meet up at a local café, library, or park — or connect virtually over Skype, Zoom, Google Meet, Messenger, WeChat, or any video chat service you prefer.

Virtual Lexes are great if there aren't many members nearby, or if you want to practice with someone across the world. In-person Lexes are perfect for building real-world fluency in your city.

What are conversation topics?

Lexody includes a library of conversation topics — called Lex topics — designed to spark structured, useful practice. Topics cover everyday situations like ordering food, making small talk, travel, hobbies, and more, at different difficulty levels.

You can browse topics, save favorites, and even suggest new ones. Pick a topic before your Lex so you both know what to focus on.

Connecting with Others

How do I find language partners?

Browse members on the Connect page. Lexody matches you with people who speak the language you're learning and are learning your native language. Use filters to narrow by location, language level, and more.

Complete your profile — especially your photo — so other members can find and trust you. The more complete your profile, the easier it is to start connecting.

What is a Connect?

A Connect is how you reach out to another member. Send a Connect request with a short message introducing yourself. If they accept, you can chat in the app and schedule a Lex together.

Free members use 1 Lexicoin per Connect request. Pro members send unlimited Connects for free.

Can I control who contacts me?

Yes. In your settings, you can choose who is allowed to send you Connect requests — for example, limiting contact to nearby members only, or to verified users only.

You always approve every Connect request before chatting. You can also block users if needed.

Pricing & Lexicoins

How much does Lexody cost?

Lexody is free to join and use. You can create a profile, browse members, and practice languages at no cost.

Optional upgrades include Pro membership (unlimited Connects, advanced filters, and more) and Lexicoins for sending Connect requests and joining Group Lexes. See our pricing page for current plans.

What are Lexicoins?

Lexicoins are Lexody's in-app currency. You earn them by completing Lexes and through other activity, and you can purchase more anytime.

Use Lexicoins to:

  • Send Connect requests (1 Lexicoin per request for free members)
  • Join Group Lex events (1–2 Lexicoins depending on your membership)

Pro members don't need Lexicoins to send Connect requests.

More Features

What is a Group Lex?

A Group Lex is a language exchange event with multiple participants — great for practicing in a social setting. Each Group Lex focuses on two languages and follows the same half-and-half format as a regular Lex.

Joining a Group Lex costs Lexicoins (Pro members pay less). You can also host your own Group Lex and invite other members.

What is identity verification?

Identity verification lets you prove you're a real person by confirming your identity with a passport. Verified members get a badge on their profile and can choose to only accept Connect requests from other verified users.

Verification is a one-time purchase and helps keep the community safe and trustworthy.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes! Lexody is available on iOS and Android, as well as on the web. Your account syncs across devices so you can chat, schedule Lexes, and browse matches wherever you are.

Safety & Community

Is Lexody a dating app?

No. Lexody is strictly for language exchange. Our terms of service prohibit using the platform for dating or soliciting members for anything other than language practice.

If you encounter behavior that violates our community guidelines, please report it or contact us immediately.

How do I stay safe when meeting someone?

We recommend these practices for every Lex, in person or online:

  • Meet in public places for in-person Lexes (cafés, libraries, etc.)
  • Keep personal contact info in the app until you feel comfortable
  • Tell a friend where you're going and when you'll be back
  • Trust your instincts — if something feels off, leave or end the call
  • Consider identity verification to connect with verified members only

Never share financial information or send money to other members. Report suspicious behavior to [email protected].

What languages are supported?

Lexody supports dozens of languages — English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and many more. Whatever you're learning, there's likely someone on Lexody learning yours.

You can add multiple languages to your profile and practice as many as you like.
